by Sandra S. Phillips
Published in the Vatican Library series Documenti e riproduzioni, authored by SFMOMA’s Senior Curator of Photography, Sandra S. Phillips, the book presents the first extraordinary collection of papal photographs, virtually unseen until now, which entered the Vatican Library’s archive in the mid-19th century. These photographic albums and portfolios were later catalogued under the name of Papal Addresses together with letters and objects, sent to the Pope from all over the world, for different occasion, as expressions of devotion. One hundred images, documenting historical events and far away places from around the world, have been selected to illustrate this wonderful publication.
In the same series of Vatican Library publications:
One Hundred Images of the Nineteenth Century from the Photographic Collection of the Vatican Apostolic Library
by Anna Maria Voltan
The volume presents a selection of 7,000 large size prints coming from the Polish Academy of Science of Rome, which today are held in the Prints and Drawings department of the Vatican Library.
