A two-day masterclass with Sandra M. Petrillo
held at the KNIR in Rome

If so, don’t miss this two-day masterclass course held by expert photograph conservator Sandra M. Petrillo. It offers an in-depth introduction to the preservation of 19th and 20th-century photographic materials, focusing on their identification, care, handling, and storage.
Masterclass outline
Participants will have the opportunity to examine several types of photographs selected from the reference collection of SMP International Conservation Studio and they will learn about historic photographic processes, photographic prints, cased photographs, as well as the techniques for producing negatives in various different formats.
The masterclass will identify their distinguishing characteristics and will analyze the preservation issues associated with them, in addition to appropriate solutions and environmental guidelines for storage and display.
After addressing these technical issues, the course will present a number of case studies regarding the conservation and restoration of damaged photographic materials.
Sandra M. Petrillo
Sandra M. Petrillo was awarded an MA in Art History from the University of Rome and she obtained an MA in Art Conservation, with a specialization in Photography, from the Institut National du Patrimoine of Paris. Since 1996 she has worked as a professional conservator with a private practice in France, Luxembourg and the USA. In 2010 she established the company SMP International Photo Conservation Studio. Based in Italy, it is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of historic and fine art photographs.
From 2012 to 2015 she was the Italian partner in the European “Daguerreobase Project” with a leading role as a content provider, in addition to functions of networking, publicizing the project, and editing the online publication “Daguerreotype Journal”.
She currently works as a teacher of Photography Conservation at the ICRCPAL (the Central Institute for Restoration and Conservation of Archive Heritage) in Rome.

This beginner to intermediate level masterclass is aimed at anyone who wishes to learn more about preserving and caring for historic photographic materials, such as curators, collection managers, cataloguers, conservators, archivists, and collectors.
