From the 18th to the 23rd of July the Summer School of the Italian Society for the Study of Photography (SISF) will once again be held at the Alpine Studies Centre of the University of Tuscia, in Pieve Tesino (Treviso). This will be a training course of six days with a transversal and interdisciplinary approach, putting photography at the centre of a wide-ranging cultural network, and this year, together with many teachers from various different professional worlds connected with the organizational aspects of exhibitions, also SMPhoto Conservation will be contributing with a lecture entitled Photographic material on display. A challenge for the restorer.
The lecture held by Sandra M. Petrillo on the 22nd of July will consider the historical 1962 exhibition The Bitter Years, the last exhibition curated by Edward Steichen in his role as the director of the photography department of the MoMA in New York. This collection now belongs to the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel (CNA) in Luxembourg, which repeated the exhibition in 2012 after a conservation and restoration project supervised by SMPhoto Conservation.
The lecture will provide an opportunity to present various case studies of photography exhibitions, such as “Photographic Inc – From Luxury Product to Mass Medium”, which is currently being held at the Foto Museum of Antwerp (FOMU), in addition to the various approaches adopted by institutions specialized in contemporary photography, such as the Moderna Museet of Stockholm.
